Join the Southeast Asian Photography Masterclass


A partnership project between OBSCURA Festival of Photography, the Ostkreuz – Photographer’s Agency and Goethe-Institut Malaysia

The Southeast Asian Photography Masterclass Scholarship is a free photography masterclass workshop for 12 photographers between the ages of 20 to 35 native to Southeast Asia. This 4 day workshop is based on a portfolio submission and awarded to 12 of the most deserving portfolios. The motive of this workshop is to enable photographers in this region to benefit through a mentorship programme with two of Germany’s finest contemporary photographers,Jörg Brüggemann and Tobias Kruse from the Ostkreuz – Photographer’s Agency, Germany’s most renowned photo agency.

Successful applicants will have all their tuition fees and accommodation sponsored.

The project includes online mentorship sessions over 2016 and 2017 and will culminate in a final workshop at OBSCURA Festival 2017 and the launch of the works in a photobook. The photobook will be designed and printed by multi-award winning German book publisher Calin Kruse of dienacht Publishing. The book will be an important documentation of cultural mapping of the Southeast Asia region to understand the growth and struggles of its social-economic fabric.

Youth: The Future

The theme for the workshop will be based around the theme of youth. You will be required to produce work at the end of the 12 month period on this theme and class discussions and mentorship.

Who Can Apply?

  • Any Southeast Asian national living and working in their home country
    Southeast Asian countries applicable for this scholarship include: Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, the Philippines & Timor Leste
  • Ages between 20 – 35 years of age
  • Has a significant photography portfolio
  • Is able to commit to the entire programme

*All participants of this programme must be able to gain stable internet access to participate in the online mentorship section of the programme.

    *The programme is currently working out funding for the following to happen in 2017:

    • Publishing of work into a book format, designed by one of Germany’s foremost book designers, Calin Kruse of dienacht.
    • Flying and hosting of all 12 participants and tutors to OBSCURA Festival 2017 for a final review of work and individual project edit.
    • Additional session with Calin Kruse who will be discussing his book design and editing process of the book with your work.
    • Launch of the photobook and slideshow event at OBSCURA Festival 2017
    • Photobook to be featured at the OBSCURA 2107 Photobook Show
    • Copies of the photobook to be donated to major photography book archives around the globe
    • Possible exhibition of work in Germany

Selection Process

The selection process of the 12 finalists for the masterclass will be conducted by Jörg Brüggemann, Tobias Kruse and Vignes Balasingam, director of OBSCURA Festival. The scholarships will be awarded to the most deserving applicants who fulfill the application criteria. While we will strive to get equal representation of participants from all countries, the selection process is in no way determined by this factor.

 

About Joerg Bruggemann
JOERG BRUEGGEMANNBorn in 1979 in Herne, Germany. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

In 2008 Joerg Bruggemann finished his photography studies under the the guidance of professor Peter Bialobrzeski at the University of the Arts in Bremen. His diploma project “Same Same But Different” portayed backpacking tourism in South Asia. Since then he works as a freelance photographer in Berlin and a year later he joined the OSTKREUZ Photographer’s Agency. In 2012, Joerg Bruggemann published his first monograph Metalheads – The Global Brotherhood with Gestalten followed by a solo exhibition at the Gestalten space in Berlin.

He received numerous awards and grants including the BFF Promotion Prize 2009, VC Bild-Kunst grant, and an honourable mention at CENTER’s Project Competition 2009. He was a finalist at the MAGNUM Expression Award 2009 and a winner of PDN Photo Annual 2013. As a member of OSTKREUZ Photographer’s Agency he received the Konrad-Wolf-Preis 2013

About Tobias Kruse
Tobias Kruse in der Agentur OSTKREUZ in Berlin
Tobias Kruse was born in 1979 in Mecklenburg, Northeast Germany. He studied photography at Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie with Prof. Ute Mahler and attended the Masterclass of Prof. Arno Fischer. He became a member of agency OSTKREUZ – Photographer’s Agency in march 2011.

Together with the other OSTKREUZ members, he worked on projects like “24h Berlin” and “On Borders” that were exhibited in renowned galleries like C/O Berlin, Deutsches Hygiene Museum or Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Besides that he exhibited both collectively and individually two times at the New York Photo Festival, in the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and at the Photo festival Hannover and in numerous other galleries in Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland. He was nominated for the Prix Voies Off in Arles, France in 2007, mentioned honorably at Leads Awards in the category “Reportage Photography” and at the Epson Art Photo Award both in 2008. In that year he won the New York Photo Award in the category “Student Editorial Series”. Additionally he is the winner of the international Photo Festival F/Stop 2010 in Leipzig, Germany.

Tobias Kruse has worked for prestigious magazines and newspapers like Der Spiegel, Tagesanzeiger Magazin, Zeit Magazine, Dummy, Neon Die Zeit, die tageszeitung and Weltwoche. Moreover, he published his photographs as books accompanying his exhibition bei Steidl, powerHouse Books and Hatje Cantz. He works and lives in Berlin.
